This piece was inspired by late 19th and early 20th century pen-and-ink illustration. I imagined the girl coming from a sleepy coastal village in New England, one in which the arrival of a ship would be relatively rare. Is she waiting for someone? Does she hope to climb aboard and see the outside world? I leave that up to the viewer to interpret.
